Tall tale teller

BN and John Cronin Brendan was the winner of the inaugural Area 16 Tall Tales competition in January 2008.

The competition drew entries from a number of skilled speakers and speechwriters from
the speechmaking club Toastmasters International.

Brendan won through to victory in the final round with his tall tale of Jesse James courting his granny in Ireland following the outlaw's unlikely escape from an assassin's bullet in America.

The judges examined more than 1,400 nominations and declared that they had chosen the most valuable websites for writers. And we cannot really disagree.

In 2006 the listings were simplified to six categories: creativity, general resources, genre/niche, just for fun, publishing resources and writing sites.

Irish Transport Journalist of the Year Runner-up for 2001, sponsored by the Chartered Institute in Ireland.

COMMERCIAL Motor Ireland writers won a major transport writers award for the fourth year in a row.

Brendan Nolan news and features contributor to CMI was judged runner-up in the Irish Transport Journalist of the Year for 2001, sponsored by the Chartered Institute in Ireland.

It was the second year in a row that the news journalist was runner-up in the competition, which receives entries from major business publications and national newspapers alike.

Brendan is pictured receiving his award from CITI President Michael Walsh at CITI’s annual dinner in Dublin in February, whilst his wife Rita looks on.

The award goes to the journalist whom the judges believe made the greatest contribution to the debate on current transport issues.

Brendan’s award was for a series of articles on organised crime links with the haulage industry, logistics, and difficulties local hauliers in the construction industry are facing. CMI editor Patric Cunnane won the award in 1998, and features writer Ann Marie Foley was runner-up in 1999.

Arthur Beesley of the Irish Times was named CITI Transport Journalist of the Year for 2001. 

The award is administered by the Chartered Institute of Transport in Ireland.

Brendan's successful entries included articles on what to do with undeliverable mystery parcels, the rights of part-time workers, and a comparison of the strengths and opportunities in road or rail transport.

 Richard Oakley of the Sunday Tribune was named CITI Transport Journalist of the Year for 2000. 

The award is administered by the Chartered Institute of Transport in Ireland.
